Brianna Williams: Teaching History and Molding the Future
Brianna Williams, middle school history teacher at Insight Academy of Arizona (ISAZ), fosters curiosity and appreciation for history in students across the state. She is passionate about helping her online school learners go beyond dates and facts to see history as a story that continues to shape the world we live in. Through interactive lessons and meaningful discussions, she encourages students to think critically about how the past influences today’s world.
She shares, “In order to truly understand current events, students must understand the events of the past. Cause and effect, historical trends and critical thinking skills are essential for 21st-century learners.”
Beyond ensuring her students are well-versed in history, Mrs. Williams aims to instill in her students excitement for learning. Thanks to her engaging lessons and open discussions, her students are not only focused and present but are eager to learn more and share their personal connections with history. The flexible nature of online learning allows Mrs. Williams to spend more time exploring relevant and meaningful topics that encourage this curiosity and participation.
Last spring, the class covered WWII and the impact Code Talkers had on the victory of the war. After the lesson, a student shared a personal story about their grandfather being a Navajo Code Talker, showcasing just how close history connects to the present.
“This experience was truly one of my favorite moments ever teaching history because we got to make a direct connection between our learning and family histories,” says Williams. “Students were fascinated and excited to learn about their classmate’s grandfather. History came alive that day!”
After 15 years in education, Mrs. Williams’ passion for teaching history remains as strong as ever. She has spent nine of those years teaching online at a K12 school in Arizona and is now in her fourth year at ISAZ, where she continues to find joy in the opportunities and connection virtual learning provides.
She originally moved to online teaching for the flexibility but stayed once she realized she loved being on the cutting edge of educational technology. She also loves the ability online teaching gives to make connections with students across the entire state. Without geographical limitations, she can meet and support students from diverse and unique backgrounds.
When she isn’t teaching, Mrs. Williams enjoys hiking, playing sports and spending time outdoors with her family. She has a goal to visit every National Park in the United States and recently checked Yosemite National Park off her list this summer. She is also an avid reader and has finished 40 books with her book club so far this year.
Whether inspiring curiosity through lessons on world events or connecting students’ family stories to historical milestones, Mrs. Williams continues to prove that passionate teaching can transcend screens, geography, and time.
